UIUC is my seventh university!
- For two years before coming to Illinois, I was a research associate (that's
pronounced "postdoc") in the Computer Science
Department at Duke. I was affiliated with
the Center for Geometric Computing;
I worked mostly with Pankaj Agarwal.
- I got my Ph.D. in
computer science at
U.C. Berkeley in 1996. My
advisor was
Raimund Seidel.
- During the fall of 1994, I followed Raimund to the
Saarland University in
Saarbrücken, Germany, officially as
a research associate in the
computer science department, and
unofficially as a visitor to MPI.
- I got my master's degree in information and
computer science at U.C. Irvine in 1992.
My advisor there was
David Eppstein, curator of the
fabulous Geometry
Junkyard.
- I was one of the first undergraduate majors in the
computer science
department at Rice,
where I got my bachelor's degree in 1987. Please don't ask me
about my GPA.
- I took a few math classes at Vanderbilt when I was in high school.
I've visited several other places, either officially or unofficially, long enough to do some research:
Smith College,
Free University Berlin,
Utrecht University,
the International Computer Science Institute,
The Ohio State University,
INRIA Sophia Antipolis,
LORIA,
Brooklyn Polytechnic University Institute of NYU,

École Normal Supèrieure.
I've had twenty different "permanent" addresses since I graduated from high school in 1983. My apartment in Champaign was the first place I'd ever lived for more than two years (but almost never more than thirty consecutive days). I've also lived for five weeks in La Paz, Bolivia; a month in Northhampton, Massachussetts; a month on US highways between California and North Carolina; several months (in small intervals) in Columbus, Ohio; two months (in one-week intervals) in Wadern, Germany; three months in Nancy, France; three months in Brooklyn; four months in Berlin; one month in Paris; and nine months in Kosterneuburg, Austria.
In October 2001, I finally bought a house in Urbana, suggesting to many people that I've finally "settled down", whatever that means. And then I had kids, the end.
